Playing Like a Children

Surrounded by historic churches, Garnethill Park has evolved from a residential area into a public space since 1991, becoming an important place for people to gather. Parks are closely tied to the idea of community cohesion — whether it’s children playing, teenagers picnicking on the grass, or elders praying in nearby churches, each interaction reflects the park’s cultural role.

 

Through this project, we sought to explore the park by engaging the senses and hosting workshops, inspired by the playful ways children experience their surroundings. Our goal was to rediscover the park’s value and meaning.

 

As part of this process, I hosted workshops inviting local residents — especially children — to share their views of the park through drawing and conversation. Their imaginative perspectives inspired my painting, which adopts a childlike visual style to capture the essence of the park and invite open interpretation.The final presentation combines the painting with photographic and video documentation of the workshops, creating a multi-layered reflection on the park’s role within the community. Through this project, I aim to celebrate Glasgow’s cultural inclusivity and highlight the vital connection between public spaces, history, and art.​​​
